Overview of CO GMU 81 Hunting Facts

Located in Alamosa, Archuleta, Conejos and Rio Grande counties in south-central Colorado lies Game Management Unit 81. Its healthy deer and elk population along with its significant tracts of public land makes this unit a popular hunting destination. Between the towns of Romeo and La Jara, located off of US-285, is a Forest Service Office, as well as a BLM Field Office. The expansive Rio Grande National Forest covers the majority of the unit in the west and is welcoming to hunters. INFO: Mule Deer Hunting in Colorado Unit 81

Mule deer occupy this area in large numbers. The versatile landscape and abundant water sources provide a natural habitat. When hunting mule deer in Unit 81, focus above timberline in the summer months and work your way down in elevation, especially as winter intensifies. To help maintain the deer population, there are currently no doe tags that can be drawn. Deer tags for all seasons are only valid for hunting bucks in units 80 and 81.

INFO: Elk Hunting in Colorado Unit 81

Unit 81 provides an ideal area for glassing elk herds. The various elevation points combined with the expansive valleys create a perfect glassing situation. The elk, like the mule deer, are going to be up higher during the warmer temperatures and will descend into the lower elevations as the weather cools down. The numerous water sources throughout the unit provide a focal point for tracking elk. The availability of OTC elk tags does increase the hunting pressure in this unit. Elk will move into the nooks and crannies of the terrain when feeling pressured. Hunters that rise to the occasion and trek into those tight spots will have a greater chance of finding elk in the later seasons.

Terrain in GMU 81 CO

The terrain of Unit 81 Colorado consists of high-country with flat-topped mesas, semi-desert landscape, rolling shrub-covered hills, and flat croplands. The Rio Grande winds along the eastern boundary line of the unit and several lakes are located throughout the unit surrounded by towering mountain peaks. The higher elevations are covered in coniferous forests. The bulk of the mountainous terrain in Unit 81 is located in the western territory of the unit.

Access Points in CO GMU 81

Forest Service roads wind along the northern border of Unit 81. SH-17 curves and winds through the southern portion of the unit and intersects with US-285 in Antonito, which then runs north and south. SH-142 cuts through the horizontal midsection on the eastern side of the unit. Unit 81 contains 365 miles of trails with 9 trailheads. There are BLM trails and roads that are maintained throughout the eastern portion of the unit. Be sure to stay up to date on which areas permit motorized vehicles and which areas prohibit their use.
