Overview of Colorado GMU 2 Hunting Facts

This unit is in the Northwest corner of the state along the Wyoming border. As one of the most sought-after units in Colorado, Unit 2 is the prime destination for hunting elk, antelope, or mule deer. The hunting location is important for increasing the success rate. In Unit 2 the climate makes water a limited resource for wildlife. Keep this information in mind when planning where to hunt and set up near a water source. The Yampa River flows along the south of the unit by Dinosaur National Monument. The Green River winds along the western side of Unit 2 and the Dinosaur National Monument. Tag numbers in GMU 2 have dwindled in recent years, making competition to hunt in this unit even stronger. The Boone and Crockett records show Moffat County Colorado boasts 28 entries for Mule Deer, 45 pronghorn antelope B&C entries, and is the top B&C unit for elk in the state. The average quality elk in Unit 2 Colorado varies anywhere between 330” to 360” with the trophy potential measuring 360” and up to 400”. There have been a handful of 400” bulls taken in the last few years. Toby D. and Davey V. both harvested bulls that meet that magical mark while hunting Unit 2. Both of these hunters have frequented the Walker Ranch for their hunting grounds when in Unit 2. Hunters that do not have enough preference points to draw a coveted elk license can find a landowner voucher but they are difficult to obtain and can be pricey. Archery hunters have the area to themselves until a small number of muzzleloader elk hunters join in on the fun around the third week of September. Archery hunters success for bulls is usually around 100% and hunters not filling a tag have usually had multiple opportunities and maybe had a missed shot or two. Muzzleloaders get to hunt during the early stages of the rut and this allows great success for them also. Early rifle hunters still have ample bugling bulls as the rut continues right on into early October.
