If you are hunting the rifle seasons in unit 16B, here are some things to keep in mind. The end of the rut is coming up as the early rifle season begins. With that said, it is not uncommon to find a few bugling bulls during this time. The rut is over by the time the later rifle seasons begin, causing it to be a little bit more difficult to locate bulls. Most of the bigger bulls will have moved into a more remote location. Set up by dense cover in steep and rocky locations for your best bet at success.

Terrain in GMU 16B NM

The terrain in unit 16B is considered mild by most hunters. The elevation here ranges from 6,500-9,000 feet. The eastern and southern half of this unit are more rough and rugged. Here you will see rocky canyons. The other parts of this unit are made up of flat ridges and mesas, with the occasional steep canyons.

The vegetation in unit 16B ranges from elevation to elevation. In the higher elevations, you will see spruce-fir forests and aspens. The middle elevations consist mostly of ponderosa pines and oak brush. Lower elevations for the most part will be pinyon-juniper woods.

Unit 16B has more than 50 trailheads which give you access to hundreds of miles of remote trails. A great plus about this unit is that ATVs are not needed for most. Hunters tend to choose to walk from trail to trail. Overall there should be no problem with you finding public access throughout this unit.
