Colorado Private Land, Landowner tags for Deer in Units 4/14/214/441 Rifle 2nd Season

Moderate to Difficult Terrain

The Colorado Private land, units 4/14/214/441 Mule Deer 2nd Rifle Season is coming up, and hunters are gearing up for their chance to hit the trails and hopefully bag a mule deer. The terrain in Colorado's Unit 4 is moderate to difficult, with a mix of mountains, forests, and grasslands. This makes for a challenging and rewarding hunting experience

Landowner Tags

In Colorado's Unit 4, Mule Deer are one of the most sought after. However, for those who own land within the unit, there is an additional option available: landowner tags. These tags provide exclusive hunting opportunities for landowners and their guests during the Mule Deer 2nd Rifle season.

Landowner tags are offered as a way to provide incentives to private landowners who provide habitat and security for wildlife on their properties. By offering these tags, the state helps to maintain healthy populations of game species while also supporting the interests of landowners.

Experience: Unit 4 Colorado has about a 60% success rate for the 2nd season rifle hunters. Buck potential is around the 165" range with the occasional bigger buck a few 180" plus but hunters should expect to harvest bucks in the 140 to 160 range.

Info: About 1/2 of the unit is the Routt National forest and hunters can add to the experience by purchasing an over-the-counter elk tag with season dates that are the same as this mule deer hunt.

Terrain: Unit stretches from east of Hwy 13 north of Craig Colorado (unit 4) to the east of Steamboat Springs (unit 14). Unit 4 Colorado has a variety of topography from mild to steep. The tallest peaks are around 11,000 feet and are mostly covered with aspen and pine some glassing is possible with much of the unit is covered in sagebrush and moderate to mild hunting conditions. As hunters travel to the east towards Colorado unit 214 and on eastward into unit 14 the mountains are a forested alpine country with steeper and taller mountains. This tag allows hunters to choose from flat milder deer hunting grounds to steep rugged terrain as in the Zirkel Wilderness area that is nestled NE of Steamboat near Clark Colorado. The Zirkel Wilderness is a great area that allows hunters wishing to avoid other hunters an opportunity to seek elk and deer miles from a road.
