Information: PUT YOURSELF into one of the most well-known trophy acres of the west for Monster Mule Deer. Genetics and lower altitude make the Uncompahgre Plateau of Colorado and GMU 61 hard to beat year after year for 180″ up to 200″ mule deer bucks. The same 200″ mule deer that get shot in the rut are all in the unit during the earlier seasons you just have to find them. The 2nd season tags are better weather and afford a hunter a milder temperature hunt than is often present during the 3rd season. Snow typically moves the big bucks down to lower country which is primarily private and that’s even a better reason to hunt the 2nd and beat the snow.
Terrain: The elevation in this area can range from 4570 along the Dores River to 10388 at the summit of the Horsefly peak. In elevations at 6500 or below, you will be in a higher desert plant community. Important plant species include but are not limited to black sagebrush, winter fat, broom snakeweed, greasewood, black brush, and rabbitbrush. In the higher elevations, the terrain is more covered in pinon pine, juniper woodlands, grassland, shrubs, black sagebrush, and Indian white grass. The pinon-juniper covers around 41 percent of this unit. Numerous roads provide easy access, but most canyons are only accessible by foot or by horseback.
Hunting Tips: Hunters are recommended to hunt at higher elevations, mostly in the early seasons. Those who do venture into the toucher canyon terrain could be highly rewarded though. Be sure to stay on the public lands in the canyon area. Hunters should stay away from most roads.
Experience: One of the best mule deer trophy units in the west with the genetics to prove it. Hunt the plateau famous for trophy bucks. Unit 61 Colorado is one of the top units in the west to find your next 200″ trophy buck. 2nd season assures you will be on the ground when the weather is good and trophy bucks just over the next hill. These tags are very hard to find. Mule deer trophy hunting at its best
