INFO: Mule Deer Hunting in Colorado Unit 2
The low number of tags issued and being that the hunting pressure is limited in this unit, directly drives up the mule deer quality and age class of the deer. The bucks have a chance to mature and grow large antlers. Big bucks paired with the high success rates this unit has continued to offer, Unit 2 is a great choice for hunting mule deer and elk in Colorado. A hunter that can spend some time scouting and locate a big muley typically does not have to worry about competition from other hunters. The overall size of the GMU combined with super low tag numbers allows hunters to be choosy prior to taking a buck.
According to the most updated reports, the average quality for a mule deer in Unit 2 is around 175” making this unit a popular choice for hunters nationwide. The overall deer population is not a huge number but there are areas with a relatively high quantity of deer.

INFO: Elk Hunting in Colorado Unit 2
If this is your first Colorado elk hunt or fiftieth, there is probably no difference in your excitement at this time. The draw odds are very slim for this unit, but maybe luck was on your side and you drew that long-awaited tag, or maybe you have purchased a landowner tag from Hunters Domain. Either way, you are truly fortunate to be preparing for an elk hunt in GMU 2 in Colorado. With the easy terrain, an abundance of public land, and great access, Unit 2 is a true example of a unit fit for any skill level. The unit’s dry landscape and climate keep the elk herds on the move in search of water sources.
The average quality elk in Unit 2 Colorado varies anywhere between 330” to 360” with the trophy potential measuring 360” and up to 400”. There have been a handful of 400” bulls taken in the last few years. Toby D. and Davey V. both harvested bulls that meet that magical mark while hunting Unit 2. Both of these hunters have frequented the Walker Ranch for their hunting grounds when in Unit 2. Hunters that do not have enough preference points to draw a coveted elk license can find a landowner voucher but they are difficult to obtain and can be pricey. Archery hunters have the area to themselves until a small number of muzzleloader elk hunters join in on the fun around the third week of September. Archery hunters success for bulls is usually around 100% and hunters not filling a tag have usually had multiple opportunities and maybe had a missed shot or two. Muzzleloaders get to hunt during the early stages of the rut and this allows great success for them also. Early rifle hunters still have ample bugling bulls as the rut continues right on into early October.
