Located in Alamosa, Archuleta, Conejos and Rio Grande counties in south-central Colorado lies Game Management Unit 84. Its healthy deer and elk population along with its significant tracts of public land makes this unit a popular hunting destination. Between the towns of Romeo and La Jara, located off of US-285, is a Forest Service Office, as well as a BLM Field Office. The expansive Rio Grande National Forest covers the majority of the unit in the west and is welcoming to hunters. INFO: Mule Deer Hunting in Colorado Unit 84

During archery season, hunters typically spot deer near open foothills or on ridges and canyons. Muzzleloader hunters who are willing to hike two or three miles away from the road have a good chance of seeing bucks with spreads as wide to 30”. Those who have permission to hunt on private land might see multiple bucks a day reaching 160” or more. For 2nd and 3rd rifle season, hunt during the early hours of the day and late in the afternoon. Deer will be moving to lower elevations during this time of the year. Hunt in isolated areas on public land for your best chance to see a buck.

The farther you hunt from public roads and trails, the better your chances of seeing a mature six-point bull. Elk herds look for isolated drainages and steep slopes where they rarely encounter humans. Several bulls have been spotted across the San Isabel National Forest. Hunter’s who are willing to hunt hard for five days have a better chance at spotting a bull.

Antelope are normally found on private ranches in this unit, although some hunters have had luck on public land. Small parcels of BLM property on the east and west of the Wet Mountains have proven to be successful in the past. Look near watering holes and open fields while you’re out on your hunt.

Unit 84 consist of flat plains with creeks and dry washes, rolling prairies with deep drainages, steep foothills with ridges and canyons below. Open slopes and parks with steep alpine basins can also be found in this unit.

Vegetation in GMU Unit 84 CO

East and west of the Wet Mountains are shortgrass prairies, sagebrush flats, oak brush slopes and cottonwoods near creeks and streams. Pinyons and junipers, shrubs, ponderosa pines and oaks are the main cover on foothills in unit 84. Mountain slopes, ridges and drainages are covered with aspens, spruces, firs and sagebrush along with grass parks.

Access Points in CO GMU 84

San Isabel National Forest, Greenhorn Wilderness Area, Pueblo Reservoir State Wildlife Area, Lake Pueblo State Park and some BLM land can be reached on public roads, including Colorado routes: 165, 67, 69, 76, 78 and 96 and Forest Service roads: 306, 330, 400 and 403.
