Accessible only by a thrilling 16-mile horseback ride along the scenic north fork of the Buffalo River, this camp promises an unforgettable wilderness experience.

The Area:

The Teton Wilderness is a sprawling 585,238-acre area established in 1964. Sitting on the southern boundary of Yellowstone, this remote spot ranks among this nation's best wildlife areas. The summer brings trumpeter swans, sandhill cranes, ducks, geese, falcons, and songbirds. Grizzly bears, grey wolves, moose, and elk wander across meadows. Golden and bald eagles, hawks, grouse, coyotes, beavers, martens, bobcats, porcupines, otters, and mink live here year-round.

Elk Hunt Unit 70:

Much of the elk hunting takes place in Wyoming Fish and Game Unit 70, which is 86.40% wilderness. This area features:

  • Moderately rolling timber-covered hillsides to steep mountainous terrain.
  • South-facing slopes adorned with sagebrush and aspen.
  • Deep valleys, large open meadows, and large drainages.
  • Lodgepole pine cover types, spruce/fir, and white bark pine at higher elevations.

Elk are scattered throughout higher elevations during September and October. Deep snow during late October often forces the elk to lower elevations. As snow depth increases, elk migrate to winter ranges along the Gros Ventre River and National Elk Refuge. This area has few open roads. Access for hunters who desire this type of hunting is limited. The majority of the access is by horseback.

The Elk:

Wyoming’s elk hunting unit 70 is home to the Jackson elk herd, boasting a healthy population of 10,734 animals in 2020, with 33 males per 100 cows. Enjoy a 45% unit-wide hunter success rate, with this camp boasting close to 60% harvest success and a 95% hunter opportunity rate. The average bull scores in the 310” Boone and Crockett scoring range.
