INFO: Mule Deer Hunting in New Mexico Unit 53
A limit on hunting permits has improved the number of deer. The potential for bucks in Unit 53 to reach record sizes is possible but rare. Archery season brings high temperatures and minimal movement of deer. To be productive, scan for bucks at day break and last light. Also during the hottest hours of the day try posting over well-used water sources. Movement during the day will be at a minimum. Occasional snow in the late rifle season can make locating deer easier.

INFO: Elk Hunting in New Mexico Unit 53
Trophy size bulls are produced in this remote and rugged country. A great reward can be found by the hunter willing to take the time to navigate the terrain here in Unit 53. It gets hot during the first archery season. Hunting during the last part of the season during the rut is advised. Try standing over shallow watering holes to be successful – water is plentiful. To be effective hunters often travel away from the roads giving bugles and cow calls to get bulls. Hunters may run into bugling bulls during the muzzleloader season. During the rifle season cows and bulls separate and head for dense cover near water and food. To locate bulls glassing during the first and last lights use good optics to watch and locate bulls feeding.
