Units 11 and 211 are some of the most popular hunting units in Colorado for unit-wide third rifle season deer hunting. These units offer a diverse range of terrain, including mountains, valleys, and forests, which create ample opportunities for hunters to find deer.
The third rifle season typically falls in mid-November when deer are on the move and actively feeding before winter sets in. Hunters who choose to hunt in these units during this time can expect to find healthy populations of mature bucks, although success rates can vary. Terrain: In the mid-range elevations with pinon juniper and mountain shrubs, you will find an abundance of deer, especially during the regular rifle seasons. In this unit, during the third season, deer are generally found in the Danforth Hills. There are several thousand acres open for public hunting in the Axial Basin through a coordinated resource management plan. If you are hunting during the third rifle season, the average buck measures 24" - 26" wide but every year a handful of good hunters or lucky hunters harvest a buck over the magical 30" range with an occasional 190" and bigger buck. Hunt in the more heavily brush-covered areas and higher elevations early in the season and hunt lower elevations in the later seasons.
